Royals from all over the world gathered in Beijing to watch last night’s Olympic ceremonies, and to cheer on their countrymen.
Before the dazzling opening ceremonies, many royals took the time to meet and greet their athletes. Denmark’s Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary met the Australian team – although Mary made it clear she was siding with both Denmark and Australia, the country she originates from.
Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia also met with their home team before the ceremonies.
Later, Felipe and Letizia cheered as the Spanish athletes marched into the Olympic Stadium, or Bird’s Nest as it is called.
Controversy arose when Greece entered the stadium, and television immediately showed ex-King Constantine and ex-Queen Anne-Marie. Whenever a country came into the Nest, broadcast TV would show the country’s head of state. But Constantine has not been King of Greece since the 1970s, when the monarchy was abolished. Tensions are not good between Constantine and the Greek government, so showing him as the head of the Greek state was an unfortunate move.
Also watching the opening ceremonies was Britain’s Princess Anne, herself a former Olympian. Cambodia’s Norodom Sihamoni was on hand to cheer on his nation – as well as Norway’s King and Queen, and Holland’s Crown Princely Couple.
With the Olympics to go on for 16 days, other royals are expected to arrive, so check back later for some updates and photos!
