She may be second in line to the Dutch throne, but for Princess Catharina-Amalia, being Princess is something that only exists in fairy-tales.
That is what her parents say as they celebrate their eldest daughter’s fifth birthday on Sunday, December 7th. Crown Prince Willam Alexander and Crown Princess Maxima gave Holland an idea of what kind of life their future Queen leads, as well as showing exclusive photos of their children to the world.
The pictures, as you can see, were taken over the summer. Amalia was photographed, along with her two younger sisters, Alexia, age 3, and Ariane, age 1 and a half.
Born Catharina Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria, she is already attending school at the Flower Camp Public School in her hometown outside of The Hague. Her sister, Alexia, was so jealous Amalia got to go to school that her parents enrolled her in a nursery school.
The little Princess speaks Spanish to her Argentinian-born mother, and English to her father.
She also enjoys swimming, playing on the computer, ballet and skiing. According to her parents, whenever Amalia, like her sisters, sees mountains, she thinks of snow.
Although she may be only 5, Amalia is already very popular in the Netherlands. She ranks fifth in the royal family, behind Maxima, Willem-Alexander, Queen Beatrix, and Princess Laurentien. This may be because, as one Dutch publication pointed out, that a “young princess always plays to the imagination of the public.”
Seeing the excitement over a fifth birthday, it can be guaranteed that as Princess Amalia grows older, she would generate more interest and curiosity from the Dutch people, and around the world.

Both the bride and groom are descendants of illustrious lines in European history. Marie-Christine is a British educated 23 year-old, who is descended from the deposed Hapsburg dynasty of Austria. Her mother, Marie-Astrid of Luxembourg, is the sister of the ruling Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. Her family is now based on Belgium, which is why her wedding took place there.
