After cross skiing for two days through wind and fog, Monaco’s Prince Albert made it to the bottom of the world, better known as the South Pole.
With this, he becomes the first acting head of state to have visited all five continents including North and South Pole during his term of office. And the Prince has only been the ruler of Monaco since 2005!
The Prince unveiled the flag of Monaco at the spot, where he arrived at 1947 GMT on Tuesday, January 13th. Temperatures were at minus 40 degrees Celsius.
He was accompanied by a team that included a doctor and good friend, South African adventurer Mike Horn.
After the arrival ceremony, Albert and his team went to a U.S. base near the Pole. The Amundsen-Scott base is one of 26 international bases the prince is expected to visit during his trip to Antarctica. He has already visited 10 others.
Prince Albert, 50, has said his trip, which is to wrap up on Jan. 22, is aimed at raising awareness about global warming.
