The British Ministry of Defense still has not decided on sending Prince William to the Falkland Islands after he completes his military training. This comes after recent reports that the second in line to the throne was going there sparked outraged in Argentina.
“No decision has been taken to post Prince William to the Falkland Islands,” said a Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman.
“Prince William has only just started his search and rescue training at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, so it is far too early for any such decision to be made,” he added.
It was reported by the Sunday Telegraph that the Prince would be going to the Falklands after completing his 18 month training to be a helicopter pilot.
The Falklands were the site of a 1982 war between the UK and Argentina over who should be sovereign over the archipelago. Argentina originally invaded the islands which prompted then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to send troops. 649 Argentines and 255 Britons were killed in the conflict.
On Monday, an aide to Argentinian Foreign Minister Jorge Taina lamented the reported deployment to the islands.
“This circumstance only serves to once again highlight Britain’s ongoing military presence in land and sea areas that are part of the Argentine Republic’s national territories,” said the aide.
Prince William’s uncle, Prince Andrew, fought in the Falklands War as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy.
