The Emir of Qatar is on an official two day visit to Bulgaria for the first time.
The Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, along with his wife, Sheikha Mozah, arrived in Sofia Wednesday. They were greeted by Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and his wife, Zorka Parvanova.
The two leaders then discussed bilateral relations and the fulfillment of the commitments made during the visit of the Bulgarian President in Qatar in 2007.
One issue that was touched was the Emir offering Bulgaria natural gas instead of the Eastern European country relying on Russian gas.
The two leaders and their delegations talked over “the possibilities of building a terminal for liquefied natural gas to serve not only Bulgaria but other European states,” the press office said, without providing any details.
Bulgaria was hit hard when Russia cut off gas supply earlier this year.
The two parties also sealed an agreement for “economic and technical cooperation” between Sofia and Doha.
The Qatari delegation meanwhile confirmed its participation at the Natural Gas for Europe summit in Sofia on April 24-25.
