The Queen of England’s husband, Prince Philip, has set a record.
Starting Saturday, April 18th, the 87 year old Duke of Edinburgh became the longest serving consort to a monarch in British history.
He surpasses the wife of George III, Queen Charlotte, by 57 years and 70 days. That queen married the already enthroned king, and died in 1818.
Prince Philip has already been the longest serving husband to a monarch for many years now. Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, served for 21 years before dying at the young age of 42.
Philip began his role as prince consort when Elizabeth became Queen in 1952.
The couple celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2007.
There are no plans for a big celebration for the Duke of Edinburgh’s milestone.
