The two leaders met in a private dining room before heading over to the Oval Office. There they discussed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in which Obama expressed the need for the Palestinians to have their own state.

“I am a strong supporter of a two-state solution,” Obama affirmed in remarks after the meeting, adding that he believed many Israelis support it as well. The problem, he said, was cynicism. “What we want to do is to step back from the abyss and say, ‘As hard as it is, as difficult as it is, the prospect of peace still exists.’ “

Jordan’s King said he hopes everyone involved in the peace process will seize the opportunity.

“I think we are looking now at the positives and not the negatives in seeing how we can sequence events over the next couple of months that allows Israelis and Palestinians, and Israelis and Arabs to sit around the table and move this process forward,” said King Abdullah.

President Obama and the King met before, during Obama’s visit to the Middle East during the summer of 2008, while he was running for the presidency.

Swedish Royals on State Visit to Holland

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden are in the Netherlands for a three day state visit. NETHERLANDS SWEDEN ROYALS

They began their visit Tuesday morning, as they were greeted by Queen Beatrix and were given a welcoming ceremony at the Hague.

During these three days, the Swedish King and the Dutch Queen will discuss ways to strengthen ties between their two kingdoms, both politically and economically.

There would also be business seminars, exhibitions to be seen, and a children’s rights meeting for Queen Silvia to attend.

In addition, a state banquet would be held in honor of the Swedish King and Queen at Noordeinde Palace.

Before leaving for Holland, the Swedish monarchs gave a few interviews to the Dutch press. King Carl XVI Gustaf reflected on Beatrix’s late husband, Prince Bernhard, saying that the Prince often called him every year to wish the King a happy birthday.

The Swedish King also described Queen Beatrix as “ambitious, extremely ambitious, always busy” – to which Queen Silvia diplomatically added that that wasn’t meant in a negative way.

The last time the Swedish royals made a state visit to the Netherlands was 33 years ago, when Beatrix’s mother, Queen Juliana was on the throne.
