Scathing New Book on Frederik and Mary

This week would mark 5 years since Australian Mary Elizabeth Donaldson married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and became simply known as Crown Princess Mary.

This is supposed to be a festive, loving time for the royal couple. But a new book coming out Monday has put a dark cloud over it.

The King and Queen of Greenland by former royal correspondent Trine Villeman, takes a look at the Danish royals, as a follow up to her previous book, 1015 Copenhagen K – which portrayed Frederik and Mary’s marriage as anything but happy.

In her latest book, Villeman accuses Frederik as a playboy who parties hard. She also says the crown princely couple’s spending is out of control, and suggests they should move to Greenland to “get back in touch with reality.”

“Mary is busy exhibiting her large social heart, but also showing her even larger designer wardrobe,” Villeman said to MSN Starlounge, a Danish website.

“The royal couple represents… that vulgar culture of just getting as much as possible. Mary does not hesitate to swindle her position as princess and she offers our old monarchy to the highest bidder in her pursuits.

“While Michelle Obama plants an organic vegetable patch in the gardens of the White House, our Crown Princess flies off on a private jet on one of her holidays.”

In her other book, 1015 Copenhagn K, Villeman claimed Frederik’s real true love was a lingerie model named Katja Stockholm. But other royal watchers doubt Frederik and Mary are on the rocks.

“They are still very much in love. I have no doubt about it. You can see it in the way they look at each other,” one royal watcher says.

Despite the book’s claims, the crown princely couple are enjoying high approval ratings. Many Danes feel the two are both ready to be King and Queen.

Another survey labeled Mary as the most popular member of the Danish royal family.

Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al-Nahayan has been linked to a case where an Afghan man was tortured, and the whole incident was caught on tape.

The case sparked international outrage, and human rights groups demanded the United Arab Emirates to do something.

The New York based group, Human Rights Watch, says word of Sheikh Issa being detained is “reassuring” and a “significant development.” However, HRW wants the UAE to do more.

“The (UAE) government needs to make the details public,” its Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson said.

“Secretive prosecutions will not deter further abuses.”

According to CNN, the torture case is upholding a nuclear deal between the United States and the UAE.

Sheikh Issa has no governmental position, but is is the half-brother of the UAE’s ruler, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In the video, the Sheikh allegedly poured sand into an Afghan grain dealer’s mouth, beat him with a nail-protruding board, burned his genitals and ran him over with a car. Salt was also poured onto the man’s wounds.

The abuse took place back in 2004, and it is unknown of the whereabouts of the man, but he spent months in the hospital.

As videotape of the torture went around the world, other allegations of abuse connected to Sheikh Issa came out.

A U.S. lawyer named Anthony Buzbee says he has a client who was tortured by Issa, and that he has “more than two hours of video footage showing Sheikh Issa’s involvement in the torture of more than 25 people.”

Coverage of this case has been limited in the UAE, and Human Rights Watch is urging the country to allow its local media cover it.

The donation came from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia itself, and it was for Prince Faisal, the country’s education minister, to deliver it.

“Gifts for Peace is a truly worthy program and represents an extension of Saudi Arabia efforts to promote peace and cultural understanding worldwide,” said Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel A. Al-Jubeir.

“Through Gifts for Peace, King Abdullah and King Gustaf have already inspired more than ten million young people in 110 countries to work for peace and understanding in their local communities.”

As honorary chairman of the Belgian Economic Mission, Crown Prince Philippe would be present for the signing of economic agreements.

One of them would be the cooperation between the Belgian port of Zeebrugge and the South Korean port of Pyeongtaek, on the country’s west coast. Both ports have increased production in recent years, and both are active in automotive, containers, liquefied gas and steel.

The two ports are interested in working with each other, and it would be Philippe who would organize the economic agreements.

Crown Princess Mathilde is not with her husband for this trip; she remains in Belgium.
