Victoria & Daniel Discuss Transplant and Wedding

daniel-hospitalThe fiance of Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria was released from Karolinska hospital Wednesday. Daniel Westling had been recovering from a kidney transplant for the past week.

Royal court spokeswoman, Nina Eldh spoke on Daniel’s behalf following his surgery, and admitted the true reason why Victoria and Daniel are going through a 16 month engagement, which is unusually long for royalty.

“[I]t will take at least six months before I am completely back on track again,” Daniel said through Eldh.

“One must exercise caution after such an operation, for example, do not go into large crowds,” Eldh explained to the newspaper, Expressen.

“You can not shake hands with a lot of people. It is important to be prepared for it, so that no one believes that there is some odd.”

Daniel received his father’s kidney during the operation. His condition is not hereditary.

“Daniel has had a serious illness, and now he has the best medical care available”

Victoria also explained other reasons for a delayed wedding.

“Then there is a lot of other things that come into play. Such a great wedding takes a very long time to prepare, Daniel will liquidate his business and it also takes time.”

The Crown Princess also spoke glowingly of the Swedish people’s response to her fiance’s surgery.

“I understand that there has been a tremendous response after transplantation. People who want to set up as donors. It’s amazing that people get involved. It warms my heart to know that so many have been thinking about Daniel. It means a lot to me.”

When asked about what will happen next, Victoria simply said:

“I will be with Daniel. I have a program, but will of course try to be with Daniel as much as possible”

“Now we take one day at a time.”
