Saturday, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia wrapped their three day visit to the Portuguese Madeira islands. During their visit, they were were welcomed with open arms by the islanders, and the King himself received a few honors.

Friday saw the King meet with Madeira Prime Minister Alberto Joao Jardim, and the Queen met with Jardim’s wife. The King later went on to Funchal Town Hall, where he got his Golden Medal to the city, which is the capital of Madeira.
Later, Juan Carlos and Sofia moved on to the Institute of Madeira Wine. There, the King earned another honor, this one the Confrere of Honor of Madeira’s Wine.
The afternoon tour of Funchal ended with a visit to Church of Our Lady of the Mount and the Cape Girao.
That night had an official dinner at the Palace of the President of Madeira. The islands are an autonomous region in Portugal, which means they have their own government but still answer to Portugal.
Saturday, the Spanish King and Queen went to see the Museum of Sacred Art, and the Square of the Palace of St Lawrence. Later on in the day, they stopped by Madeira’s Porto Santo, an island with only 5,000 people.
With that, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia hopped on a plane, and returned to Madrid. They certainly appeared to enjoy their visit to the archipelago. The Queen was seen with her trusty camera, taking photographs of all the sites she got to see.
