Princess Madeleine Engaged!

After a few days of rumors circulating the media and the Internet, the Swedish royal court announced the engagement of Princess Madeleine to long time boyfriend, Jonas Bergstrom.

This is the second royal engagement announcement for Sweden in six months. In February, Madeleine’s sister, Crown Princess Victoria announced her engagement to long time love, Daniel Westling.

27 year-old Madeleine has been with 30 year-old Bergstrom, a lawyer, since 2002.

A wedding date has not yet been announced.

But according to the royal palace spokeswoman, Nina Eldh, the wedding would not take place next year – since Victoria’s wedding would take place that year, plus there would be elections.

UPDATE: During a press conference, the happy couple spoke about their relationship and how Jonas proposed.

Madeleine first met Jonas when she was 17, and he was 20. They started out as friends before they began dating three years later. Jonas said he fell in love with the Princess’s big blue eyes. Madeleine said she was attracted to her Jonas’ eyes too.

The two have been engaged since the beginning of the summer. Jonas asked Madeleine to be his wife on the Italian island of Capri, by getting down on one knee. The Princess says she replied, “of course I want to!”

Jonas is the son of Claes and Elisabeth Bergström. Once he marries Madeleine, he will become the Duke of Halsingland and Gastrikland, the places where Madeleine is the Duchess.
