Friday was a more somber day for the Crown Princely couple of the Netherlands during their week long visit to New York. Yesterday was the eighth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and Willem-Alexander and Maxima took the time to remember those who were killed.
The royal couple attended the memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, along with Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime, Verhagen. They bowed their heads in silence at 8:46am and 9:03 am, the times when the two planes hit the towers.
Crown Princess Maxima once lived in New York City for five years, and knew some of the people who witnessed the attacks.
Willem-Alexander and Maxima were also invited to the commemoration of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Later in the day, the couple traveled to Washington DC to meet with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The four met for about an hour, discussing the strong ties between the U.S. and the Netherlands.
