The royal family of Spain welcomed Bolivian President Evo Morales at noon today. The South American leader is on a two day state visit to the country.

Although Morales was polite while meeting with the royals, he was very outspoken on Bolivian-Spanish issues elsewhere. For example, the Bolivian President met with expatriots in Madrid, and demanded Spain to give citizenship to those who are considered to be illegal.

“When the Spanish and Europeans came to America, our forefathers didn’t call them illegal,” Morales told the crowd.

“We are working with the United Nations to reach an agreement so workers, who contribute socially and economically, are no longer considered illegal,” he added.

We all have the right to live in any part of the world, respecting the laws of each country.”

Morales also denied that his country was looking to sever ties with the United States and Spain. He even said that Bolivia was open to energy investment, as long as the companies respected Bolivian norms.

But when Morales dined with King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia Monday evening, he did not make any political statements. He simply enjoyed the dinner.
