On Tuesday, Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia went to Santa Fe to help the New Mexico city celebrate its 400th anniversary. Crowds gathered at the Palace of the Governors to catch a glimpse of the royal couple. When the couple arrived, there were cheers for them.

“It gives me great pleasure to express how much we share the pride felt by the citizens of Santa Fe on this historic anniversary,” Felipe said in a speech. “We are so happy to be here with you to celebrate it, and to take this lovely opportunity to visit again the beloved state of New Mexico and the United States, a close friend and ally of Spain.”

“We would also like to acknowledge here all those who have contributed to forge modern New Mexico, the one you all live in, enjoy and continue to dedicate your hopes and daily hard work,” the Crown Prince added, as he acknowledged Spain’s influence on Santa Fe culture.

After that, he and Letizia visited the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, where they laid flowers at the La Conquistadora. They then returned to the Plaza to watch a theater group, Teatro Paraguas. Later, Felipe added to a time capsule some Spanish coins and the Spanish flag.

“We would like that to be introduced into the time capsule together with the spirit of the atmosphere that we are living today,” Crown Prince Felipe said. “I would like to hope to join you in this wish that the atmosphere … will be similar to what we’ll see whenever this capsule is opened — the atmosphere of friendship, roots and family values.”

Yesterday, the couple traveled north to Chicago, where they opened a new center of the Windy City’s Instituto Cervantes, a Spanish laungauge school funded by the Spanish government. Felipe and Letizia also toured the Millenium Park and met with Chicago Mayor Daley.
