Crown Princess Mary Awards Green Fashion Designer

As part of the UN Climate Change Summit going on in Copenhagen this week, there are a series of related events going on to promote eco-friendly products and lifestyles. Today, Crown Princess Mary presided over a fashion show where green was the new black.

“The fashion industry is full of good ideas and creative people, people who are always ahead of time,” said Mary, who awarded the designer with the best fashion line. “It is an industry that picks up on and mirrors the developments in our society.”

20 fashion designers from the five Nordic countries gathered at the Opera House to display their works. Those works included clothes made out of organic silk and cotton, polyesters constructed from recycled plastic bottles, and other fabrics made from industrial and agricultural waste.

After a runway show displaying these unorthodox clothes, a prize was awarded. The winner was Finnish designer Saara Lepokorpi, who used organic wool, milk powder and corn scraps for her line.

The fashion event was done by the Nordic Initiative Clean and Ethical (NICE), which has been establishing companies in the Nordic fashion industry in becoming more environmentally friendly.

Masako Vows to Fight Illness

On the day she turned 46 years-old, Japan’s Crown Princess Masako released a statement promising that she will continue to fight a stress-induced adjustment disorder she has been battling for nearly six years.

“I would like to continue my efforts to recover, with the help of people around me,” Masako said in the statement. “Under the guidance of my doctor, I have been doing my best, step by step, to regain my health, mentally and physically.”

Since being diagnosed with the mental illness, the wife of Crown Prince Naruhito has rarely been seen doing any official duties. Her last appearance was during Emperor Akihito’s ascension anniversary.

“I am deeply grateful that their majesties have always been looking after me carefully, and I also appreciate the encouragement and support I receive from the Crown Prince every day,” Masako said.

During the Crown Princess’s birthday, there is usually a statement released by a team of doctors giving updates of her conditon. But this year, it was not released. “It has taken longer (than usual) to prepare the statement because we have been trying to give explanations in an easy-to-understand manner,” an official said.
