Like all other royal tours, the visit was kept under wraps due to security reasons. “A trip like this has to be done with discretion”, said Nina Eldh, the royal court spokeswoman.

The couple went to Camp Northern Lights in Mazar-i-Sharif, where Victoria test-drove combat vehicles, and was oriented on what the troops are doing in the area.

“It’s been very rewarding in place to meet you and you become incredibly impressed by the work,” said the Crown Princess, according to a press release on the Armed Forces website.

Upon leaving, she wished the troops luck. “I hope you really feel that you are making a difference for the people of Afghanistan,” the future Queen of Sweden told them.

There are currently 500 Swedish-Finnish troops in the war torn nation now. Many have been injured by attacks and gunfire.

Princess Nathalie, the niece to Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, announced today that she is engaged to marry Alexander Johannsman. The 34 year-old Nathalie has been dating Johannsman for two years, and both are active equestrians.

Princess Nathalie’s parents are Princess Benedikte, sister of the Queen, and Prince Richard zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. Because of her father, Nathalie is stylized as simply, Her Highness.

Alexander Johannsman is a German national from the town of Gütersloh. His father breeds racehorses and is also a well-known show jumper.

According to the Danish court, the couple are currently vacationing in Australia and will return home later this month.

Dubai Sheikh Opens Burj Khalifa

The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, inaugurated the world’s tallest structure in the heart of the emirate today. The skyscraper, named Burj Khalifa (Khalifa Tower), stands at over 800 meters, or half a mile high.

The Sheikh gave a short speech before officially opening the 200-story tower. In it, he changed the name of the building from Burj Dubai to Burj Khalifa, after the ruler of neighboring emirate, Abu Dhabi, and President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.

It is possible the structure’s name was changed to thank Al-Nahyan for bailing Dubai out of an $80 billion debt crisis late last year.

Burj Khalifa opened with fireworks fired from the building itself, as well as a lighting show. At the same time, the waters of Dubai Fountain, the world’s largest, danced to traditional Arabic music.

The tower will be mostly residential, with about 37 floors for offices.
