It was announced today that Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria and her fiance, Daniel Westling, went to Afghanistan on Sunday to visit the Swedish-Finnish troops stationed in the country.
Like all other royal tours, the visit was kept under wraps due to security reasons. “A trip like this has to be done with discretion”, said Nina Eldh, the royal court spokeswoman.
The couple went to Camp Northern Lights in Mazar-i-Sharif, where Victoria test-drove combat vehicles, and was oriented on what the troops are doing in the area.
“It’s been very rewarding in place to meet you and you become incredibly impressed by the work,” said the Crown Princess, according to a press release on the Armed Forces website.
Upon leaving, she wished the troops luck. “I hope you really feel that you are making a difference for the people of Afghanistan,” the future Queen of Sweden told them.
There are currently 500 Swedish-Finnish troops in the war torn nation now. Many have been injured by attacks and gunfire.
