On Friday, the Queen of Spain gave out the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre to the participants of the sailing event that took place between March 27th and April 2nd at the Balearic Islands.
Queen Sofia, a former Olympics sailor herself, smiled proudly as she distributed a total of 37 trophies to the athletes from various countries, some of who have competed at the Olympics or the Paralympics in recent years. They were classified according to 11 categories, and there were also a few special prizes for some of the sailors. Italian sailor Alessandra Sensini helped Sofia out with the trophy handling.
The ceremony lasted for about an hour and afterwards, the Queen mingled and chatted with the winners, their families, sailing fans, and several of the Islands’ officials.
The Queen is spending Easter on Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands, with King Juan Carlos, Crown Prince Felipe, Crown Princess Letizia, and her two granddaughters, Infantas Leonor and Sofia. The family will be attending Easter mass on the island at noon.
Sofia’s two daughters, Infanta Elena and Cristina, are not joining their family this year.
