The Syrian President and First Lady arrived in Toledo before heading to Madrid. In Toledo, they went on tour of the country’s former capital, with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos as their guide.

Upon arriving in Madrid, the President and his wife dined with King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia at Zarzuela Palace. He also held talks with the King regarding bilateral ties and Middle East issues.

In addition, Spain and Syria signed an agreement on building capacities and enhancing academic ties between the educational institutions of both countries.

Tomorrow, President al-Assad will meet with Prime Minister Zapatero.

Maxima Christens New Holland America Ship

In Venice Sunday, Dutch Princess Maxima baptized the latest ship for Holland America – the Nieuw Amsterdam. It is the fifteenth ship of the Holland America Line and can accommodate 2100 passengers.

Dressed in a lilac suit, the Princess baptized the new ship by turning a dial which brought the champagne towards the cruise, which was protected by a screen.

By christening this ship, Maxima became the latest in a long line of Dutch royals who performed the duty for Holland America Line. The tradition started eighty years ago by Prince Henry with the Statendam III in 1929.

Since then, many members of the House of Orange followed: Queens Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix. Other royals have included Queen Beatrix’s sister Princess Margriet, who baptized as many as four ships for Holland America Line.

The ship company has been around since 1873, and many Dutch immigrants used it to migrate to the New World.

Despite its name, which was what New York City was originally called, the Nieuw Amsterdam will sail for Florida in October.
