One day after their historic FIFA World Cup win, Spain’s national football team went to Madrid for a reception at Zarzuela where they met with King Juan Carlos and his family.

“Thank you champions, in the name of all of Spain and all Spaniards,” Juan Carlos said after personally greeting each of the players.

“You are an example of sportsmanship, nobility, good play and team work.”

“This is a well deserved victory for an exceptional team which thrilled the hearts of all Spaniards. You brought together all Spaniards, made our dreams a reality and projected the name of Spain around the world.”

The King then was presented with a red team jersey which was signed by all the players.

The King was not in South Africa to watch the game, but his wife, Queen Sofia, and Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia were there to cheer and congratulate the team. Juan Carlos stayed in Madrid to watch the finals on TV along with his grandchildren and eldest daughter, Infanta Elena.

Nearly all of the Spanish royal family were present at the reception, some wearing red to represent the team’s winning colors.

Also at the reception were Felipe and Letizia’s two daughters, Infantas Leonor and Sofia, both whom wore the team’s t-shirts. Team Captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas even showed the young girls the World Cup trophy, which 4 1/2 year old Leonor gladly held at one point.

After the royal audience, the entire Spanish team went through the streets of Madrid in a bus parade where they met with thousands of their overjoyed countrymen.
