Lalla Salma Chairs International Conference on Cancer Control

In Marrakech Thursday, Princesses and First Ladies from the Middle East and Africa gathered for the International Conference on Cancer Control, chaired by Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma.

Held by her cancer association and in partnership with the Health Ministry and the World Health Organization, the conference is meant to tackle ways to prevent the disease. The topic for this event is What strategy for preventing cervical cancer and facilitating cooperation and access to healthcare in the Middle-East and Africa?”

During the opening ceremony of the three day conference, Her Royal Highness suggested a Middle East – Africa fund be set up to fight cancer, plus the setting up of the African Oncology School.

“Given the current economic and financial crisis besetting even major donor countries, we must rely on ourselves and our own resources to meet the challenges facing our countries in this area,” Lalla Salma told the audience.

In attendance for this conference is Princesses Dina Mired and Ghaida of Jordan, who praised the Moroccan King’s wife by saying, “[t]hanks to the tireless efforts of the Lalla Salma Association to Fight against Cancer, the treatment of this problem has become accessible to thousands of patients in Morocco.”

Also there is Sylvia Bango Odimba, Gabon’s First Lady; Conde Djénné Kaba, First Lady of Guinea; the First Lady of Equatorial Guinea, Constancia Mangue de Obiang; Malika Issofou Mahamadou who is the First Lady of Niger; and finally, the wife of the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso, Sika Kaboré.

In the evening, there was a banquet in honor of the participants in the conference.

On Friday, Lalla Salma and the participants visited Marrakech’s oncology and hematology center at the Mohammed VI University Hospital. They were briefed on how the center operates, which is the first of its kind in the Marrakech region. It has state of the art technology and a chemotherapy unit, contributes to scientific research and trains doctors to battle cancer.

The International Conference on Cancer Control concludes Saturday.

Princess Letizia Attends Madrid Book Fair

On Wednesday, Spain’s Princess Letizia was at the “XXXV Salon del Libro Infantil y Juvenil” – or 35th annual book fair – at the Galileo Cultural Center in Madrid. The event has long promoted an interest in reading for children and young adults.

The Princess visited the fair with Secretary of State for Culture, José Maria LaSalle, and the president of the General Council of Children’s and Youth, Sara Moreno.

She met with several of the children at the book fair. At one point, she sat with a group of children who watched a performance of storytelling acts in the survival of classic stories through oral tradition.

Her Royal Highness, LaSalle and Moreno were briefed on how the publishing industry continues to grow despite Spain’s economic turmoil. They were also told about how it is difficult for Spanish titles to crack the English language market.

Prince Albert II Becomes Patron of World Olympic Association

The Prince of Monaco was unanimously voted by the International Olympic Committee and the World Olympic Association to be the latter’s patron on Thursday. Prince Albert II is a five time Winter Olympian and has been an IOC member since 1985.

WOA president Joël Bouzou said: “It is a tremendous honour for the World Olympians Association to have His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco as the new patron of our organization. He is an Olympian and a true humanist who has always believed that the values of sport can change lives and can change society for the better.”

“His involvement and advocacy will greatly increase our influence and will make a huge difference to convince new stakeholders that Olympians across the globe can and should contribute to improve the world in which we live. I can’t thank him enough for his support.”

Albert now succeeds the late Juan Antonio Samaranch as the WOA’s patron. Samaranch was once president of the IOC.

This news comes as the Prince is at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria from Friday, January 13th to January 22nd.
