Former Nepali King Threatened with Jail Time

A top communist leader in Nepal is threatening to put ex-King Gyanendra in jail for conspiring the Himalayan country’s peace process and its drafting of a new constitution.

This comes just weeks after Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai accused the former monarch of doing all this. Many political leaders have grown wary over Gyanendra increasing his appearances at public and religious functions in recent months. They also wonder if he is trying to re-establish the monarchy because of him speaking publicly on the shaky political situation in Nepal.

“If the former King is found conspiring against the peace process and constitution drafting, he would be directly sent to jail,” said former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who is the senior communist leader in Nepal.

“Anyone who goes against the achievements of the People’s Movement of 2006 will be obliterated.”

The peace talks are those between Maoist revolutionaries and government forces in 2006.

King Gyanendra was forced to give up his powers in 2006 after weeks of pro-democracy protests, and Nepal abolished the monarchy in 2008.

Double Marriage Engagement for House of Habsburg

Click here to learn more at Lux-arazzi!

Right before Christmas, on December 22nd, the House of Habsburg announced two engagements in Brussels, Belgium.

Archduke Christoph and Archduke Imre, the sons of Archduke Carl Christian and Archduchess Marie Astrid both announced their intention to marry their respective girlfriends – Adélaïde Drapé-Frisch and Kathleen Walker.

Christoph and Imre both gave their fiancées sapphire and diamond engagement rings. While they might appear to closely resemble the same ring that once belonged to the late Princess Diana, and Prince William gave to the Duchess of Cambridge, it should be noted that the rings were modeled after the one the two men’s father gave to their mother. It is a family tradition.

The two men are not members of the Habsburg family, which once ruled Austria, but also the nephews of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, through Marie Astrid, who was born a Princess of the Grand Duchy. They are also the younger brothers of Archduchess Marie Christine, who married Count Rodolpe of Limburg-Stirum back in December 2008.

Congratulations to the House of Habsburg!

“We have come here today … to honor, with full historic gratitude and national pride, the work of Leka Zogu, son of Ahmet Zogu, King of Albanians,” said Tirana’s Mayor Lulzim Basha

“The Zogu family never negotiated for the Royal Crown, always considering it as the crown of the Albanians,” the mayor continued.

Along with Basha, President Bamir Topi, Prime Minister Sali Berisha, the Parliament Speaker, Jozefina Topalli, and Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga were present for the funeral. Muslim, Catholic and Orthodox prayers were said during the service.

Also during the funeral, Leka’s only son, Prince Leka II said this: “I, Prince Leka II, swear in front of the body of my father that I will follow the road of King Zogu, of King Leka I to be at the service of the nation, the homeland.”

Crown Prince Leka was buried next to his wife and mother at the public Sharra cemetery in a Tirana suburb.

He died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack. He was 72 years old.

Leka spent most of his life in exile. He returned a few times to Albania in hopes of re-establishing the monarchy. In 2002, he and his family permanently returned.

Crown Prince of Albania Dies

Crown Prince Leka of Albania passed away Wednesday at a hospital in Tirana. He was 72 years old.

Check out the Albanian Royal Family website here

He was admitted to the Mother Teresa Hospital last week for heart and lung problems and went into a coma soon after.

Leka was the only son of King Ahmet Zogu, who reigned between 1928 and 1939, and Queen Geraldine.

Just days after his birth, Leka’s family was forced to flee Albania when Italy invaded. The Crown Prince would spend 63 years living in exile in Europe and Africa.

He was crowned King Leka I by the Albanian diaspora at the Bristol hotel in Paris in 1961, the year his father died.

Leka returned to his country in 1993 after the fall of communism but was prevented to stay. He tried again in 1997, this time to re-establish the monarchy by force, which failed. He would return permanently in 2002.

Albania’s Prime Minister Sali Berisha declared this coming Saturday as a national day of mourning and the Crown Prince’s funeral will have “royal attributes”.

“His active efforts and role to topple the communist system and, during transition, to heighten Albania’s national values and promote the integrating process remain alive in the nation’s memory,” said Albania’s President Bamir Topi.

Leka is survived by his son, Leka born in 1982, who works for the Albanian foreign ministry.

Romania Celebrates Former King’s 90th Birthday

Tuesday was an historic day for Romania, as its former King gave a speech at its Parliament for the first time since 1947 as part of the celebrations of his 90th birthday.

King Mihai, the last surviving World War II leader, was forced to abdicate by a Soviet backed regime and lived in exile for most of the 20th century. He returned to the country several times in the 1990s and now lives in Bucharest.

Frail, but dignified, the ex-King encouraged Romanians to have faith in democracy.

“All united, we have to pursue our efforts in order to become once more respected and dignified,” he said.

“The time has come after 20 years to … break for good with the bad habits of the past,” said Mihai. He added in 2011 “demagogy, selfishness and attempts to cling to power” should not have their place in Romania, which was a zing against the country’s much criticized leaders.

He also spoke of his “long life, full of happy and unhappy events” and praised the role of monarchy in the country.

“My wife and I will continue to back Romania’s fundamental interests,” Mihai said.

His speech was greeted with a standing ovation and several “Long live the King” by several Parliament members.

But not everyone is willing to celebrate. Romania’s president Traian Basescu has accused Mihai as being “Russia’s servant” and called his abdication “betrayal”. He also said the former King should be accountable for the deaths of Romania’s Jews and Gypsies by the Nazis.

But a member of the ruling Liberal Democrats (PDL), Radu F. Alexandru, said he was happy that parliament “paid homage to this historic moment.”

“It was a constructive and useful speech,” former president Ion Iliescu said.

In the evening came a glittering birthday celebration at the National Opera with members of reigning and non-reigning royals attending. They included the King of Sweden, Queen Sofia of Spain, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, and Grand Duchess Maria and her son Giorgi of the House of Romanov, as well as Bulgaria’s former King Simeon.

Although King Mihai is very popular in Romania, few want the monarchy to be re-established.

Georgian Royals Celebrate Birth of Son

The Royal House of Georgia is celebrating the birth of an heir this week, as Princess Anna gave birth to a boy late Tuesday night.

The baby is named Prince Giorgi Bagration Bagrationi, and he is the first child between Anna and her husband, Prince David. The Princess has two daughters from a previous relationship.

This child is not only the heir to the defunct throne of Georgia, but also the symbol of two united families. In February 2009, David and Anna married to unite their feuding families – the Mukhraneli and Gruzinsky branches of the Bragationi dynasty.

However, their union was not a love match – it is widely believed to be an arranged marriage. It is also widely rumored that David and Anna separated within three months after their wedding and had to work on reconciliation.

Now that they seem to have agreed to stay married, the couple now have a son whom historians have pointed out will bring an end to which family should lay claim to the Georgian throne.
