Crown Princess Mary Calls for Fashion to be More Eco-Friendly

Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary inaugurated the Copenhagen Fashion Summit Thursday by urging the fashion industry to be more environmentally sustainable.

Read more about the summit here

“The textile industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. Textile is also Denmark’s fourth largest export commodity,” Her Royal Highness said in her opening speech.

“We need to put some social footprints of our descendants.”

Originally, Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit was supposed to attend this summit, but according to Eva Kruse, the head of Danish Fashion Institute, which hosts Copenhagen Fashion Summit, she was unavailable.

So, it was Crown Princess Mary who stepped in, and she was a fitting choice. She was named by Vanity Fair magazine as one of the world’s best dressed women in 2010.

In case you are wondering, Mary wore a dress by the Swedish fashion store, H&M from its organic line.

Princess Caroline Opens Princess Grace Fashion Exhibit

On Monday, Monaco’s Princess Caroline inaugurated the “Princess Grace: Habiller Une Image” fashion exhibit at the Villa Sabeur at the Nouveau Museé National de Monaco.

Separate from the globally touring exhibit about the late Princess’ style, this one is based on a collaboration between the Scottish fashion house Pringle of Scotland and the students at the famed Central Saint Martins College of Art And Design Fashion Courses. The students recreated Grace’s unique style through research provided by personal contacts of Monaco’s Palace, plus other institutions in the Principality including the Prince’s Palace Archives and Library, the Archives Audiovisuelles de Monaco, the Bibliothèque Municipale Louis Notari, and the Garden Club of Monaco.

According to the Nouveau Museé National de Monaco, “The research focused on Princess Grace’s daily wardrobe, particularly knitwear and Pringle of Scotland archive styles, and how this was essential to her personal interests and passions.”

The name of the exhibit “Habiller Une Image” translates to “more than a pretty face” and it is derived from a quote Grace said while she was filming a movie in 1955, a year before she married Monegasque Prince Rainier III. “I don’t want to dress up a picture with just my face”

The exhibit officially opened Tuesday and will run until May 20th.

Charlotte Casiraghi the New Face of Gucci

The eldest daughter of Monaco’s Princess Caroline has been named the new face of the Italian high fashion label, Gucci.

Click here for more photos of Charlotte!

Charlotte Casiraghi, a competitive equestrian, has worn Gucci riding gear during competitions, which were made exclusively for her and not sold anywhere else.

Now, the 25 year old will be used as a model for the label, replacing actress Evan Rachel Wood.

She will be following in the footsteps of her mother plus her grandmother, the late Princess Grace, in modeling.

Charlotte is already known for her fashion sense. It was widely reported that at the age of 5, she asked for a Givenchy dress. She is often found sitting front row at fashion shows, such as Stella McCartney, Diane Von Furstenberg, Etam and Yves Saint Laurent. Even more so, she once posed for the cover of French Vogue.

Frida Gianinni, the designer for Gucci, calls Charlotte one of her favorite style icons, and that she is “the modern royal whose effortless elegance defies contemporary style”.

It should be noted that despite being the descendent of Monaco’s Princely family, and being fourth in line to its throne, Ms. Casiraghi is technically not a royal herself. She does not have a title nor styled as Her Serene Highness. This is because her father, the late Stefano Casiraghi, was a commoner.

Danish New Year Celebration 2012

Every January, the Danish royal court celebrates the new year with a series of gala events. For the first day of the new year, the court invites members of the government and the court.

See gallery of the arrivals at SN.dk here

Prince Joachim was the first to arrive for the banquet and he was solo this year. This is because his wife, Princess Marie, is on maternity leave.

The crown princely couple were scheduled to come next, but there was a delay. So, Queen Margrethe II and husband Prince Henrik arrived. The Queen, who will mark 40 years as monarch later this month, wore a rose colored gown she had worn during the celebrations for her 70th birthday in 2009.

Frederik and Mary pulled up at the palace last. The Crown Princess wore a long sleeved red velvet gown with a train. It was the same gown she wore to the same event in 2007. But back then she was pregnant with Princess Isabella, and for this year, her dress was restitched for her slim figure.

The New Year Court banquet takes place at Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg and it features a four-course menu where, among other things, potato soup, pheasant and marcel cake were served.

It has been a tradition, with the exception of a few years, since 1598 for the Danish monarch to celebrate the new year in this fashion.

British Royal Trio Attend Sun Military Awards

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with Prince Harry, were at the Sun Military Awards Monday night. It was a night to honor British troops for their service to the United Kingdom.

Check out more images of the event here

William and Harry wore tuxedos, while Catherine looked amazing in a black velvet strapless Alexander McQueen gown. She also wore an impressive necklace that was a wedding gift from a not-yet revealed person.

The trio chatted with servicemen and women at the Imperial War Museum before the actual ceremony. It was then Harry gave a speech where he both praised the troops and talked about his military career. The 27 year old Prince had spent the past several weeks in the United States learning to fly Apache helicopters.

He said: “I am a young Army officer, a serving soldier. Like my brother, I share many of the same hopes, the same aspirations to go on operations, and the same fears as all those who serve our Queen and country.

“By an accident of birth, though, it falls to 564673 Captain Wales humbly to express – on behalf of my comrades-in-arms and people up and down the country – the admiration we feel for the extraordinary men and women we honor here tonight.”

He added: “It’s often said of our armed forces that they are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Well, I don’t entirely buy that. Ordinary people don’t run out under withering enemy rocket and heavy machine gunfire to rescue a wounded comrade.

“Ordinary people don’t brave monsoon conditions dangling on a winch line to rescue 13 people, each in turn.

“For that matter, ordinary people don’t put their lives on the line for distant folk, such as the Afghans, who need our help and are now turning their country round because of it.”

Harry also spoke warmly of the families of the troops.

“The strength and courage it must take to see your husband or your wife, your father or mother, son or daughter, head off into the unknown – and to support them doing it – I can hardly even imagine,” he said. “So, to our amazing, brave families, I know I join every single service man and woman in saying from the bottom of our hearts, thank you.”

The Sun Military Awards, or Millies as Britons call it, were also attended by soccer star David Beckham, along with sons Brooklyn and Cruz, Gordon Ramsay, Jimmy Carr, and Frank Lampard.

Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg were also there. They held a reception at 10 Downing Street and Clegg said this to the troops: “You shouldn’t just be proud of the servicemen and women with you in your work, and you shouldn’t just be proud on behalf of your families and communities but I hope you do also know that you make the whole nation very, very proud indeed.”

2011 Nobel Prizes Given Out in Sweden

Over in neighboring Sweden, the rest of the Nobel Prizes were handed out, with the Swedish royal family witnessing the event. While some may see the Nobel ceremony as a time to honor the achievements of the winners, others see it as a major a fashion event, especially for the royal women.

Check out more photos at Daylife.com

King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Prince Carl Philip were present for the ceremony. The Queen wore the same gown she wore to the pre-wedding events of Victoria and Daniel back in June 2010. The Crown Princess looked stunning in a deep blue sequined dress which flaunted her pregnancy. She is six months along, by the way.

Also in attendance, as guests, were the Grand Ducal couple of Luxembourg. Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa were at the Nobel ceremony because one of the laureates was from Luxembourg.

During the event, at the Stockholm Concert Hall, King Carl Gustaf personally gave the prizes to the recipients in the areas of medicine, literature, economics, physics and chemistry. The winners were:

Medicine: Canadian Ralph Steinman, who died just three days before it was announced he won. His wife, Claudia, took home the medal in his place. The other two were Bruce Beutler of the United States and Luxembourg-born Frenchman Jules Hoffmann

Literature: Swedish poet Tomas Transtroemer

Economics: Thomas Sargent and Christopher Sims of the United States

Physics: Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess of the United States and US-Australian Brian Schmidt

Chemistry: Daniel Shechtman of Israel

The Nobel Prize laureates take home a gold medal, a diploma, and 10 million kronor ($1.48 million dollars, 1.10 million euros), which is shared if there is more than one recipient.

After the ceremony was complete, the royal family escorted some of the winners out of the Concert Hall and led them to the banquet where 1,400 guests gathered for fine dining. The menu consisted of lobster with pickled winter vegetables and Jerusalem artichoke purée, Guinea hen with porcini mushrooms and lingonberries, poached pearl onions with parsley roots and velouté sauce Mandarin and white chocolate mousse on a cinnamon-spiced cake with raspberry marmalade and fresh raspberries.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore a lovely red gown for  the American Scandinavian Society’s 2011 Yule ball at the Metropolitan Club Friday.

Her Royal Highness was all smiles as she posed for cameras before entering the club. Clearly, this has been a good year for her. Her charity work keeps developing as well as her relationship with New York financier Chris O’Neil.

Madeleine had more reasons to smile at the Yule Ball. She received a humanitarian award for her work with World Childhood Foundation, which was started in 1999 by her mother, Queen Silvia.

William & Catherine Raise Money at Charity Gala

Thursday night saw the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge quietly go to a charity gala at St. James Palace in London. The event was held by the 100 Women in Hedge Funds, a charity Prince William supports, and it raised money for the Child Bereavement Charity, another one the Prince supports.

Before the gala kicked off, William gave a speech where he discussed the pride he felt for both organizations.

“I find it enormously rewarding and gratifying to observe how two organisations which mean so much to me are working so superbly with one another,” he said.

“What you are both doing together to alleviate the suffering of children who have lost family members, and bereaved families who have experienced the tragedy of losing a child, is beyond praise.”

The event raised £675,000 for the Child Bereavement Charity.

About 300 women from the hedge fund sector joined the Duke and Duchess for the gala.

William wore a black tie tuxedo while his wife, Catherine, dazzled in a red low cut dress with billowing sleeves. The dress was designed by Beulah London.

Princesses Attend Paris Fashion Shows 2011

As fashionistas observed the latest collections from the Paris’ biggest designers, they were joined by some princesses. That shouldn’t come as a surprise since many royals are known for their fashion and style. They also have to rely to fashion designers to make them look good when they make their numerous public appearances. But perhaps, royal women just enjoy fashion like many of us do.

See more photos of Charlene at the Akris Fashion Show here

Princess Charlene of Monaco was the first royal to be spotted during Paris Fashion Week. She attended the Akris collection, and sat front row with Vogue editor Anna Wintour not too far from her. Charlene wore an Akris dress during the Red Cross Ball back in August.

Princess Beatrice of York was seen at the Elie Saab Ready to Wear Spring/Summer Collection on Wednesday. Dressed in a figure hugging red dress, Beatrice looked dazzling. With her interest in Elie Saab, you can expect the Princess to look beyond dazzling in the future.

See more photos of Princess Clotilde at Daylife.com

Princess Clotilde – or simply, Clotilde Courau – was spotted at the Balmain show last week. The French actress turned member of Italy’s deposed House of Savoy is known for her style that is both simple and classy.

View more photos of Princess Siriwanwaree here

But the real royal star of this season’s Paris Fashion Show was Princess Siriwanwaree Nareera of Thailand. Daughter of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, the Princess has been making waves with her style, especially for the fashion shows. Instead of simple attire, Siriwanwaree wore dark purple lipstick, wide shoulder pads, black lacy dresses and all things avant garde. In addition, she attended not one, but six fashion shows, such as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Lanvin. Certainly with her style, this is one royal fashionista to look out for. In fact, she’s a fashion student in Thailand and once unveiled her own collection in Paris.

And hopefully, the other princesses would accept her. While Siriwanwaree was able to sit next to and chat with Princess Clotilde during the Balmain show, she was unable to do the same with Princess Beatrice during the Elie Saab show. According to UK’s Telegraph newspaper, the Thai Princess was blocked from approaching Beatrice by a security guard, who explained she was not going to meet with her. Siriwanwaree was insulted, saying “Is that the sort of Princess you’ve got?”

Opening of Swedish Parliament 2011

The House of Bernadotte came together Thursday for the annual opening of the Swedish Parliament, the Riksdagen.

View more photos here at Svensk Damtidning

In the morning, the royal family took part in a church service before the actual opening of the Riksdagen. Everyone was there, from Their Majesties to all three of their children: Crown Princess Victoria with her noticeably growing baby bump, Prince Carl Philip who was taking a day away from his agricultural studies, and Princess Madeleine, who had flown in from New York. Even Prince Daniel was there, on the very day he marked his 38th birthday.

But duties comes first for royalty. After the service, the royals sat through the first day of Sweden’s Parliament session for the political year.

The reason why the royals wear black during the opening of Riksdagen is because that color was the hue for the ladies of the court starting in the late 18th century during the reign of King Gustaf III. It is to upkeep the tradition these days for the royal women.

But black is an option later in the day when an opera is performed and the royals attend. Crown Princess Victoria wore a silvery knee length dress that hid her pregnancy. But her sister, Princess Madeleine wowed many fashion followers by wearing a rather sexy gown – and yes, the color was black.
