Princess Caroline’s Husband Hospitalized

Click here for the original Hello! article

The estranged husband of Monaco’s Princess Caroline is being hospitalized in Spain. Reportedly, Prince Ernst August of Hannover, age 57, is ill with pancreatitis, a condition brought on by heavy drinking. The Prince once suffered from the disease back  in 2005.

That episode prevented Ernst from attending the funeral of his father-in-law, Prince Rainier III, the late sovereign of Monaco. At the time, Ernst said he will give up his wild ways.

“I don’t want (to die) yet. My daughter is only five years old,” he said of the now 12 year old Princess Alexandra.

Although married in 1999, Prince Ernst and Princess Caroline have been seen together in over two years. Early last year, the Prince was photographed kissing another woman while vacationing in Thailand. He also did not attend the wedding of Caroline’s brother, Prince Albert II earlier this month.

So far, there are no plans for Ernst and Caroline to divorce.

Ernst August of Hanover Fined Over Assault

A German court found the husband of Monaco’s Princess Caroline received a 200,000 euro fine for assaulting a hotel owner in Kenya back in 2000 on Tuesday. The fine was reduction from the 2004 sentence of 445,000 euros.

Judge Andreas Schlueter found Prince Ernst August of Hannover guilty of intentionally causing bodily harm to Josef Bruhnlehner, German news agency DAPD reported.

Ernst August never denied hitting the hotelier, but instead claimed he only slapped Bruhlehner twice instead of beating him while wearing a metal ring. Princess Caroline testified this in January, saying the hotel owner exaggerated his injuries.

Caroline and Ernst August have not been seen in public together since June. The Prince was photographed kissing another woman while vacationing in Thailand, just days before his estranged wife appeared in court.

Princess Caroline Defends Husband in German Court

Princess Caroline of Hannover appeared in a German court today to testify as a witness in her husband’s trial. The Princess appeared dignified as she took the stand to give her testim0ny on what happened back in 2000 when Prince Ernst August assaulted a nightclub owner in Kenya.

After saying a few brief words in German, Caroline went on to speak in English. She testified that her husband “gave two slaps with the hand flat. And he said, one in the music, the other by the lights.” She also said Ernst August met the nightclub owner at a “chance meeting” on the beach.

After two hours on the stand, Princess Caroline left the court looking serious and not even glancing at the audience.

Her appearance in court was a media frenzy, as it has been a week since Ernst August was photographed in Thailand kissing another woman. Caroline and Ernst have not been seen in public together since June, and rumors are abundant that a divorce is in the works.

The Prince was not present in court today.

Prince Ernst August Photographed Kissing Another Woman

This week a German tabloid published photos of Prince Ernst August of Hannover, husband to Monaco’s Princess Caroline, kissing another woman while on vacation in Thailand. These photographs come after months of rumors that there is a rift between the couple.

Now there is speculation that Caroline will divorce her estranged husband. She was skiing in Switzerland with her children while Ernst was in Thailand.

Last year, the Princess took her 10 year-old daughter with Ernst, and moved back to Monaco after living in Fountainbleau, France since her 1999 marriage to the Prince of Hannover. She then enrolled her daughter, Alexandra, in a local school.

Meanwhile, Ernst was noticeably absent from several high profiled events in Monaco in 2009, including National Day and the Bal de la Rose. Such absences prompted wonder if there was another Grimaldi marriage failing.

Princess Caroline has stood by her husband during many embarrassing situations, such as him urinating on a Turkish pavilion at a 2000 Expo and him getting into a brawl with a nightclub owner in Kenya.

The latter has the Prince in court again, and it speculated that Caroline herself will testify as a witness to the incident next Wednesday. One wonders how that scene will play out.

Monaco announced Tuesday that Princess Caroline likely won’t be able to testify as a witness in her husband’s trial. The Minister of State claims she has overseas commitments on Thursday, the date the Princess is scheduled to be on the witness stand.

November 26th was the set date for the Princess’ appearance before Prince Ernst August of Hannover’s trial in Hildesheim, Germany began. The court refused to let the Princess testify through mutual legal assistance in Monaco. The court official is said to be surprised Caroline may not be appearing in court.

55 year-old Prince Ernst is on trial for attacking a disco owner in Kenya in early 2000. He was originally fined for the attack in 2004, but the Prince is now seeking a lighter sentence.

The Prince – who is a distant relative to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II – admits he did hit the owner but denied using anything but his hands.

Ernst August is looking to having his sentence and charge reduced after being convicted in 2004 of causing serious bodily harm and fined euro445,000 ($633,560).

In 2004, a German court found that the Prince repeatedly beat Joseh Brunlehner with a metal object after becoming irritated from the noise from a nearby dance club.

Although the incident happened in Kenya, the Prince was not arrested by Kenyan authorities, but instead by German, who are allowed to arrest citizens who commit crimes abroad.

Ernst August denies using any metal objects to attack Brunlehner. Instead he says he “gave a symbolic left and right slap to the face,” his attorney Hans Wolfgang Euler said, reading an hour-long statement from the prince.

Ernst August’s trial was reopened when witnesses – including wife Princess Caroline – testified they could corroborate his story. This trial is expected to last 11 days and it is unknown if Caroline would be called to the stand.

The Prince has had brushes with the law previously. In 1999, he was fined for attacking a photographer, and had his license suspended for speeding on a French highway in 2003.

Most famously, he was photographed in 2000 urinating outside a Turkish pavilion during the World’s Fair in Hannover.
