The day began with Her Majesty’s 500th State council meeting. She was accompanied by husband Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.
Then at noon, the Queen and the Prince Consort appeared on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace. Between 8,000 to 10,000 Danes gathered below to wish their Queen the best for her ruby jubilee. Some of those people arrived very early in the morning to get a spot.
On the adjacent balconies were her sons, her daughter in laws and her grandchildren – even the twins! Even Princess Marie, who’s on maternity leave and is due any day, was on the balcony.
On the other balcony were the Queen’s fellow Scandinavian royals from Norway and Sweden, as well as the former Greek royals.
In the evening came the gala banquet, with all the tiaras, men in uniform and designer gowns. In attendance were all the Danish royals – save for Princess Marie and the grandchildren, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, plus Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, Greece’s deposed royal family including King Constantine, Queen Anne-Marie, Crown Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal.
Speeches were given in honor of Margrethe’s jubilee. Prince Henrik gave this moving speech in honor of his wife:

“Dear Queen, dear wife, dear Daisy. I am the first man in the kingdom to admire you,” he said.”We have over these 40 years shared many good and exciting things together, but also some difficult challenges. But always with dedication and sensitivity. ”
To the attendants, Henrik said, “All we will together with the Danish people celebrate a queen who has dedicated her life to Denmark and Greenland and the Faroe Islands. A monarch who has shown the greatest capacity to carry out her mission in life: to work for Denmark with God’s help, the people’s love, and Denmark’s strength.”
Finally, Her Majesty spoke and expressed her gratitude plus her awe at spending the past four decades as Denmark’s monarch. “They have gone so quickly,” she said.
“The commitment is as strong for me today, but I would like to stress that the obligation has always been driven by joy. The joy is rooted in the heat that has met me and my family everywhere through every year, in celebration and joy as in sorrow, as well as in daily life,” the Queen said.
To her husband, she said: “You, my dear Henri, has stood by me and been of encouragement and inspiration for me in the work that we have been two to perform. This day is your anniversary as well as mine. Together we have seen our sons grow up, marry and enrich us with a whole bunch of grandchildren.”
Continuing, she said:”40 years is more than one lifetime, unmanageable for many years to look forward to for those who are young. But in retrospect it seems to me that they’re gone so fast. Today when I look back over the years, it is with deep gratitude, gratitude for the task which has been entrusted to me, and grateful for everything it has given me,” she said.
To end it off, Queen Margrethe said: “I ask all to rise and speak with me and say God preserve Denmark.”

With her husband and son by her side, Princess Marie of Denmark lit the town of Møgeltønder’s Christmas tree Thursday.
The sight of the lit tree delighted the crowds who sang Christmas songs and danced around the tree.
Santa Claus was also on hand for the event. He took time to meet with the royals and say hello to little Henrik.
Joachim and Marie have much to look forward to early next year. Their second child together will arrive in late January.

This past Sunday, the eldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark marked his 12th birthday. Prince Nikolai, the eldest son of Prince Joachim and the former Princess Alexandra, celebrated his big day with most of the Danish royal family. The ones who were missing were the Queen and her husband, Henrik the Prince Consort, and Crown Princess Mary, who was in Africa, and the royal twins.
This meant Nikolai got to spend time with his youngest brother, 2 year old Prince Henrik, who is the son Princess Marie, Joachim’s second wife. Marie is expecting again, and this could bring another brother or even a sister for Nikolai this coming January.
The birthday boy already has another brother, Prince Felix, age 9.
Nikolai and Felix live with their mother, who is now known as the Countess of Frederiksborg, following their parents divorce in 2005, and their stepfather Martin Jørgensen, who Alexandra remarried in 2007. They both attend Krebs School in Copenhagen.
Nikolai is seventh in line to the Danish throne.

Just as royal fans of the Danish royals are getting used to the adorable twins of the crown princely couple, they will have another reason to get all fuzzy next year.

It was announced Wednesday by the Danish Royal Court that Princess Marie, wife of Prince Joachim, is expecting her second child.
Her baby will be due in January 2012 and will be delivered at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.
Joachim and Marie already have a son, Prince Henrik, who was born in May 2009. But this will be the fourth child for Joachim, who already has two boys, Princes Nikolai, age 12 and Prince Felix, age 9, from his first wife, Alexandra Manley.
After this child, there will be eight grandchildren for Queen Margrethe II and her husband, Henrik the Prince Consort.
Congratulations to Joachim and Marie!
UPDATE: Prince Joachim was interviewed today about his expectant wife and he had this to say about his upcoming fourth child: “We hope and, above all, a healthy and happy child. And what sex is – with three boys I would also like to have a girl,” the Prince told Radio Denmark.
When asked about the age span between this child and his oldest, Joachim replied: “I do not think it is a very big problem. The oldest two have bonded magnificently with their younger brother and vice versa, so I can not see why they can not also get along magnificently with number four.”

Monday was time for the annual photocall for the Danish royal family at Gråsten Slot Castle where they were spending their summer vacation. This year’s session was more exciting since it allowed the world to see just how big Frederik and Mary’s twins have gotten.

And boy haven’t they! Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine have developed round, chubby cheeks and were the darlings of the photo session, and of the royal family.
Their elder siblings, Prince Christian 5 1/2, and Princess Isabella, age 4, doted them as did their grandparents Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik. Isabella and Josephine wore matching blue and white dresses. Perhaps that is a hint of things to come in future photo sessions?
Although the twins were the stars, one must not forget the other members, including Prince Joachim, who was there with his wife, Princess Marie, and all three of his sons – Nikolai, almost 12, Felix, age 9 and 2 year old Henrik.
The Queen’s sister, Princess Benedikte, was at Gråsten Slot along with her son, Prince Gustav, and his girlfriend, Carina Axelsson.
Vacationing at the castle brings Frederik and Mary some time to relax before they head for a busy autumn. They will do official visits to the United States, Russia and the Crown Princess’ native Australia.

Christian will be 5 years old this coming October, and there will be a lot of celebrations to mark that milestone. As for Isabella, age 3, she is turning into a lovely young lady – or rather, lovely young princess!

Time flies! It was a year ago today that Denmark’s Princess Marie gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, whom she and husband Prince Joachim named after their son’s grandfather, Prince Henrik, consort to Queen Margrethe II.

Now the little prince is a year old. To mark this occasion, Joachim and Marie invited photographer Steen Brogaard to take pictures of their son in late April. The photographs also include little Henrik interacting with big brothers Princes Nikolai and Felix, Joachim’s sons from a previous marriage.

On Saturday, Prince Joachim of Denmark took part in the Historic Copenhagen Grand Prix. While he didn’t win, he still had much to be happy for, with the birth and recent christening of his new son, Prince Henrik.

Prince Joachim discussed his son in a Friday press conference. One of the big questions was why he named the baby boy Henrik.
“You get one guess,” Joachim said with a big smile. Henrik is the name of his father, Denmark’s Prince Consort.
While Joachim had dinner with wife Princess Marie the day before the race, she was not present for the event. Nor was their baby.
“I know not whether the environment is right, from a logistical perspective, it is not obvious,” the Prince explained their absence.
During the dinner, Princess Marie was seen wearing a medallion of a lamb with a cross on it. It is believed to be gift she received from last week’s christening of Prince Henrik.

That is the name of the newest member of the Danish royal family.
The baby’s name was revealed by tradition during his baptism in Mogeltonder at exactly 6pm local time.
Proud mom Princess Marie was the one to tell all of Denmark and royal fans worldwide the name of her little son, whom up until this point was called the “Lille Prins.”
Marie did so when she brought her baby son up to the baptismal font and told the minister who her son was.
All members of the Danish royal family were in attendance at Mogeltonder, the same church where Prince Joachim married Marie in May 2008. The family members also included Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, Joachim’s sons from a previous marriage.
Of course, Queen Margrethe and her proud husband, Prince Henrik, the Prince Consort, were there, as well as Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary and their two children, Prince Christian and Princess Isabella.
Crown Princess Mary had a reason to be happy today. She is one of baby Prince Henrik’s godparents.
The others are Benjamin Grandet, Charles Cavallier, Fru Britt Davidsen Siesbye, and Christian Scherfig.
Prince Henrik cried a little bit during the ceremony. He was calm when the baptismal water was poured on his head, but then started to cry afterward.
Also getting teary-eyed was Princess Isabella, who probably got tired from having to sit still during the service.
Even her cousins, Nikolai and Felix, seemed a bit bored. Towards the end, they began to make paper airplanes out of their programs, and pretended to throw them at their father and stepmother. The Queen and the Prince Consort did not make it a secret they were not pleased with that behavior.
Later on, Prince Christian got a paper plane from one of his older cousins. He waved his plane at the media and stuck his tongue out.
The baptism ceremony ended at 6:30pm local time. Prince Joachim put his arm around Princess Marie as he guided her to their car. They returned to their palace at Schakenborg, where there is to be an informal reception for all 200 guests of the ceremony.
So, now there are two Prince Henriks of Denmark!
Denmark’s Prince Joachim and Princess Marie joined the regent couple and Joachim’s two sons on board the royal ship, Danneborg, for a family gathering as Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik did their annual tour of the Kingdom.

Also with them was their two and half month old son, who’s name would finally be revealed this Sunday during his baptism.
It is tradition for the Danish royal family to keep the baby’s name a secret until the ceremony.
Once the moniker is mentioned, it would satisfy many royal watchers who have been biting their nails over the name of the little prince.
Some guess the name would be Albert, since it is of French origin, which Princess Marie and Prince Henrik are. Others say the boy would be called Waldemar, Benjamin, or even Joachim and Henrik – the baby’s father and grandfather!
Either way, Sunday’s baptism would be an exciting event for Denmark and the royal fans everywhere. It would take place starting at 17:30 local time at Mogeltonder, the church where Joachim and Marie married in May 2008. A golden baptismal font, that has been used by the Danish royals since 1671, will be brought to the church.
Also what will be revealed at the baptism are the baby’s godparents. Who they are is also not known yet.
