Lalla Salma Chairs International Conference on Cancer Control

In Marrakech Thursday, Princesses and First Ladies from the Middle East and Africa gathered for the International Conference on Cancer Control, chaired by Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma.

Held by her cancer association and in partnership with the Health Ministry and the World Health Organization, the conference is meant to tackle ways to prevent the disease. The topic for this event is What strategy for preventing cervical cancer and facilitating cooperation and access to healthcare in the Middle-East and Africa?”

During the opening ceremony of the three day conference, Her Royal Highness suggested a Middle East – Africa fund be set up to fight cancer, plus the setting up of the African Oncology School.

“Given the current economic and financial crisis besetting even major donor countries, we must rely on ourselves and our own resources to meet the challenges facing our countries in this area,” Lalla Salma told the audience.

In attendance for this conference is Princesses Dina Mired and Ghaida of Jordan, who praised the Moroccan King’s wife by saying, “[t]hanks to the tireless efforts of the Lalla Salma Association to Fight against Cancer, the treatment of this problem has become accessible to thousands of patients in Morocco.”

Also there is Sylvia Bango Odimba, Gabon’s First Lady; Conde Djénné Kaba, First Lady of Guinea; the First Lady of Equatorial Guinea, Constancia Mangue de Obiang; Malika Issofou Mahamadou who is the First Lady of Niger; and finally, the wife of the President of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso, Sika Kaboré.

In the evening, there was a banquet in honor of the participants in the conference.

On Friday, Lalla Salma and the participants visited Marrakech’s oncology and hematology center at the Mohammed VI University Hospital. They were briefed on how the center operates, which is the first of its kind in the Marrakech region. It has state of the art technology and a chemotherapy unit, contributes to scientific research and trains doctors to battle cancer.

The International Conference on Cancer Control concludes Saturday.

Lalla Salma Presides Over National Day Against Cancer

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma was in Rabat Tuesday to preside over a ceremony for the country’s National Day Against Cancer.

An advocate for fighting cancer, the Princess gave out awards in recognition to those who seek to find cures for the disease. For this year, Dr. Hussein Abdel-Razzak Gezairy, Director of the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean, won the international award.

Other recipients included Sister Thérèse Garnier for her 20 years working for cancer patients. She works at an oncology center in Casablanca. Also taking home an award was Lahcen Houjir for his work in training nurses at the national oncology institute in Rabat, where he is the head of the nursing care department.

Also on Tuesday, Princess Lalla Salma was present for the signing of agreements between her association and GlaxoSmithkline in order to provide better access to medicine for those who are not wealthy enough to get them.

Another agreement had the association team up with the World Alliance Against Cancer with cancer treatment projects in Francophone nations in Africa.

Lalla Salma Calls for Global Fund to Fight Cancer

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma made a formal call for a global fund to be set up in order to prevent and treat cancer during a gala dinner in New York Tuesday. The wife of King Mohammed VI expressed that such a fund should be modeled after the global fight against AIDS.

As she gave a speech, Lalla Salma stressed fighting cancer should be a worldwide priority.

The Princess, who is chairwoman of the Lalla Salma Association for the Fight Against Cancer (ALSC), also talked about how it is necessary for the international community to share experience, technology and training.

She also insisted the ALSC would cooperate with other international cancer organizations, both public and in the private sector.

Lalla Salma also expressed her dismay that tobacco – which behind a large number of cancer cases – is not considered to be an illegal drug because of the damage it causes to one’s body.

In addition, she also voiced her dismay over the gap between the developed and the third world, and how poorer countries are unable to help their citizens who are suffering from cancer. Lalla Salma said this was because of declining international aid to those nations.

She also said in January of next year, Morocco will host a symposium on cancer.

“The association that I have the honor to chair will be pleased to share its experience with renowned institutions from friendly and brotherly countries”, said the Princess.

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Khadija Turns 4 Years Old

The second child of King Mohammed VI and Princess Lalla Salma of Morocco celebrated her fourth birthday Monday. Princess Lalla Khadija marked her big day with her family, which included big brother Crown Prince Moulay Hassan, who is 7 years old.

When she was born, there were 21 cannon rounds throughout the Kingdom. Moroccans congratulated the royal family by signing guest books at the Directorate of Royal Protocol and Chancellery, as well as in different Prefectures and Provinces of Morocco, as well as the various embassies and consulates abroad.

There were also celebrations in the cities and towns of Morocco, with squares and public building decorated with lanterns and the national flag.

Families who also had babies the same day as the newborn Princess were given presents by the royal family.

Lalla Khadija may be only four years old, but she has already made appearances at some of her father’s engagements, particularly at Ramadan events.

Lalla Salma Opens Fashion Exhibit

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma was in Marrakech on Friday to open the “Yves Saint Laurent and Morocco” exhibition at the Museum of the Majorelle Garden. The fashion on display show the late French couturier’s love of the North African country.

During the opening, Lalla Salma toured the 44 creations, documents, pictures and sketches in the first room. Some of the outfits shown are Saint Laurent’s interpretation of the Moroccan caftan and sarouels, which are Moroccan style pants.

In the second room is where the visitor goes outside the Majorelle Garden to see the nature which inspired Saint Laurent.

The third room, called “Ideal Africa” has timeless items made of surprising substances mainly wooden beads, mica and raffia.

This exhibit will eventually move to Casablanca, where it would be open to the public until March 18th.

Lalla Salma Awards Cancer Fighters

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma was in the capital Monday to preside over the closing of the the Lalla Salma Association Against Cancer (ALSC) General Meeting. The meeting took place on the country’s national day for fighting cancer, a cause close to the Princess’s heart.

During the meeting, Lalla Salma gave awards and training certificates to Moroccans and internationals. The foreign prize went to the F. Hoffmann-La Roche Laboratory for its many researches with cancer, as well as its social activities in Morocco, through various partnerships with ALSC.

The prize was given to F. Hoffmann La Roche’s CEO Dr. Franz B. Humer.

As for the national prize, that went to Professor Said Benchekroun, head of the department of Hematology/Oncology of ‘August 20 Hospital’ in Casablanca.

Prof. Said Benchekroun introduced clinical hematology in Morocco over 20 years ago and has since been active in its development.

Lalla Salma Lays Foundation Stone for Oncology Center

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma, who is Chairwoman of the Lalla Salma Association for the Fight against Cancer, was in Casablanca Friday to lay the foundation stone for a gynecological oncology center. The facility is meant to detect breast and cervical cancer and deal with pain treatment.

Costing nearly $4 million, the center will take about 14 months to build, and will be located at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital Center.

The center will also be equipped with a surgical service that will allow around 2000 cases per year with the aim of improving quality, develop new surgical techniques and ensure training for specialized surgery.

Moreover, the facility will include a screening service for cervical cancer for 252,000 women, between the ages of 30 and 50 years old, plus breast cancer, with an estimated 155,000 women between the ages of  45 and 70 years old. It is even aimed at reducing the number of advanced cancer patients, improving therapeutic results and cutting the cancer mortality rate.

Lalla Salma Chairs World No Tobacco Day Celebration

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma was in the outskirts of Rabat Monday to host the World No Tobacco Day celebrations. As chairwoman of the Lalla Salma Fight Against Cancer Association and goodwill ambassador for the World Health Organization, it was natural for the Princess to take part in such an event.

The ceremony included reports of anti-tobacco efforts and a presentation on how to successfully combat tobacco. Awards were given out to companies who ban the use of tobacco. Maroc Telecom won the golden label, while BMCE Bank and ONCF got the silver labels.

Lalla Salma also gave out awards from the cancer association that bears her name. The first went to the 20th August Hospital in Casablanca as a “tobacco free hospital”. The second went to Amira Lalla Salma High School in Rissani for being a tobacco free high school while the Jamal Eddine Afghani Junior High School in El Haouz got the award for being a tobacco free junior high school.

World No Tobacco Day 2010 was organized by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Lalla Salma Fight against Cancer Association, under the slogan, “Let every day be a World No Tobacco Day.”

Lalla Salma’s Visit to Qatar

Morocco’s Princess Lalla Salma is currently on an official visit to Qatar. It began on Wednesday and it is expected that it would last until this weekend. The Princess was invited to this Persian Gulf nation by Sheikha Mozah, wife of the Emir.

Lalla Salma’s first stop in Doha was to the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA) where she met with its Deputy Board Chairperson Dr. Juheina Al Issa, and SCFA Secretary General Nour Al Maliki. They explained to her the SCFA’s role in promoting and enhancing the family, how the Council functions and what it has achieved since its inception in 1998. Their achievements include legislating family laws, banning children from being camel jockeys and lobbying laws for those with special needs. Lalla Salma expressed her appreciation for the SCFA.

Later, the Princess was given a tour of the Museum of Islamic Arts, which opened in late 2008 to house artwork from the 7th century up until the 19th century.

On Thursday, Lalla Salma went to the Sidra Medical Research Center, which is meant to be the Persian Gulf’s first international academic medical center living up to global standards in the study of health issues when it opens in 2012. Lalla Salma was briefed on the center’s ambitions and given a tour of the facility.

Following that visit, the Princess stopped by Qatar’s Diabetes Association where she learned about how it educates and helps people with the disease.

It is not known how long exactly will Princess Lalla Salma remain in Qatar. It is rumored that she will be attending the wedding of Sheikha Hind, the daughter of the Emir and Sheikha Mozah, this Friday. But there is no confirmation on this.

Lalla Salma Chairs Launch of National Cancer Prevention and Control Plan

The wife of the King of Morocco oversaw the official launch of the national plan for cancer prevention and control. As chairwoman of the Lalla Salma Association Against Cancer, the Princess was the likely person to chair this event.

The national plan aims to give quality health care to those suffering from the disease throughout the country. It has come together through the partnership between Lalla Salma’s cancer organization and the ministry of health. The plan will span 10 years and cost close to $1 billion dollars.

As part of cancer prevention and control, the national program intends to include 78 measures of prevention, early detection, diagnostic care and therapy, and palliative treatment.

There will also be a program for the early detection of breast and cervical cancer that would be done in over 30 cancer screening centers all over Morocco.

The prevention programs will the fight against tobacco, plus promote healthy living and seek to reduce behavioral risks.

In addition, there will be more facilities built, such as four regional oncology centers in Safi, Laâyoune, Meknès and Tangier, two gynecological oncology centers in Rabat and Casablanca, and two pediatric oncology centers in Fez and Marrakech.
